More Than a Set of Keys: What Data Tells Us About the Road to Self-Sufficiency
When OnRamp gifts a vehicle, the transaction is visible and immediate: a set of keys, a hug, a moment of joy. But what happens next? What does the road actually look like for the families we serve in the months and years that follow?
We set out to find the answer. Our February 2026 Self-Sufficiency Report compiled survey data from 29 OnRamp clients, each one tracking their own progress before receiving a vehicle and at regular intervals afterward. The findings are both encouraging and humbling, and they’re shaping how we show up for every client we serve.
The Numbers Tell a Story of Real Growth
Among clients who reached their 12-month milestone, median net monthly income (all income minus all expenses) grew from $300 to $600, a 100% increase! That’s a mother who can pay her electric bill without choosing between lights and groceries. That’s a father who can finally start a savings account. That’s the breathing room that changes everything. Net worth followed a similar trajectory, growing from a median of $300 at pre-donation to $500 at 12 months. That’s modest but meaningful growth. Perhaps most meaningfully, 38% of clients reported improved physical health by their latest follow-up. A reliable vehicle means making it to medical appointments. It means arriving at work on time, every time. For clients like Jacqueline, a substance abuse counselor and recovery coach who received her Honda Accord earlier this year, reliable transportation is the backbone of her ability to show up for dozens of others who need her. Or Jennifer, a 911 dispatcher and single mother whose savings were repeatedly wiped out by her son’s medical expenses. When she received her Mazda3, she didn’t just gain a car. She regained her footing.
What the Dips Teach Us
The data also reveals that for most clients, the journey isn’t always linear. At the six-month mark, average income and net worth often dip before they climb. New insurance premiums and new opportunity costs can tax a budget. The early months after receiving a vehicle can be as disorienting as they are hopeful. This is precisely why OnRamp’s model doesn’t end at key handoff. Our one-year free maintenance program, ongoing staff check-ins, and proactive outreach to clients showing signs of financial or emotional struggle are not add-ons; they are the mission. Eight clients in our current year of care have been flagged for follow-up care based on their survey responses. We know their names. We’re reaching out.
The Road Ahead
The data confirms what we’ve believed from the beginning: a vehicle is the catalyst, not the conclusion. Self-sufficiency is built mile by mile, with the right support alongside for the journey. We are grateful to walk that road with our clients, and grateful for every donor, advocate, and partner who makes it possible.
The keys open the door. The OnRamp community keeps it open.
