Client #237: Greatest Lover of Jesus

Mildred is 81 years old and still working hard. She’s the sole provider for her family, including a grandchild with cystic fibrosis. She is also an integral member of Peaceful Rest Baptist Church in Bryan. But what truly sets Mildred apart is her persevering love of Jesus. As her advocate, Abbie Walsh, said of her, “I have known Mildred for over 21 years. She is like a Grandma to my children who lovingly call her Mimi. She's one of the best humans I've ever known. Mildred is the kindest, most loving, most hard working, and greatest lover of Jesus that I know.”

Mildred’s new-to-her Toyota Corolla… cough, cough… Pontiac Vibe (same cars, different badges)

Unfortunately, Mildred’s vehicle was lost in a flood a few months ago, leaving her without necessary transportation to get to work, church, the grocery store, or her family to the doctor. The entire household was in jeopardy. So Abbie nominated her to OnRamp, and by God’s grace, we already had in our inventory a lovely Pontiac Vibe (which is actually a Toyota Corolla hatchback that Pontiac just rebadged!) We are so delighted to gift this reliable car to such a deserving woman.

Abbie told us that when she called Mildred the night before the donation, Mildred said she could not fall asleep until 2 AM! She was so excited to have her freedom back so she could continue caring for her family and serving her community. In fact, when we gave her the car, she tearfully said she was most looking forward to being able to go back to church, which had been impossible without a car (notice how gifting vehicles IS part-and-parcel of worship!)

Mildred reminds us that charitable work like ours is not always about a stronger person helping a weaker person. Mildred is stronger than me! Still working hard at 81 to feed her family while volunteering at her church!? She’s the strong one… who just needed a hand up when her vehicle broke down. As her interviewer, Amber, said of her, she’s already living “a life of true humility and sacrifice that I know will echo into eternity.”

Thank you to all who give to OnRamp so we can bless heroic men and women like Mildred. We couldn’t do this work without you! If you’d like to keep it going, consider giving one-time or monthly by visiting our GIVE page. For those who want to support us at a local event, come out to this year’s Wheels, Watches, and Whiskey at the Stella Hotel September 20th where we’ll have a silent auction to raise money to buy another car like this one for a local family in need.
